Prince William and Kate Middleton urged to support gay marriage

Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell wants Prince William and fiancée Kate Middleton to support gay marriage.

The pair, who are to wed next Friday, “have the option to get married”, Mr Tatchell said.

He said: “We wish William and Kate every happiness. May they have a joyful marriage and a wonderful married life together.

“The royal couple are lucky. They have the option to get married. Gay couples don’t have this option. They are barred by law from marriage.”

He added: “There would be uproar if the government banned Jewish people from marriage and offered them civil partnerships instead. We would call it an anti-Semitic law; something we would expect in Nazi Germany, not democratic Britain. Well, Jews are not banned from marriage but gay people are. ”

Mr Tatchell is currently pursuing full marriage equality at the European Court of Human Rights and argues that civil partnerships are not good enough,

PinkNews.co.uk understands that the Liberal Democrats in government and increasingly Tories in the centre – including David Cameron – are minded towards full marriage equality.

An amendment in the Equality Act will give gay couples the right to have civil partnerships in religious buildings and ministers hope this provision will be enacted by the end of the year.
